Missions Statement: SCWF is a non-profit organization striving to create a support network for the women, seniors and youths of Shelburne County working towards the betterment of the community

About Us: The Nova Scotia Women's FishNet was established in 1995 as a network of groups, and women, concerned with the impact of the changes in the fishing industry on communities, families and women. Of prominent concern, also, was the long-term sustainability of these communities.
As an affiliated organization the Shelburne County Women's FishNet promotes networking between groups, and women, who share similar concerns. They promote inclusion in decision-making aspects relating to the fishery and the sustainability of costal communities. The Women's FishNet collaborates on project and activity development adapting to the changes we all see in rural and coastal communities. Amongst the goals are developing sustainable and viable employment alternatives. The Shelburne County Women's FishNet's mandate has broadened to focus on fostering the empowerment and well being of communities.  Anything done to improve the health of our community be it physical, mental, emotional or financial benefits the well being of the entire population, women included.

Brief History:

  • In April 1995 Nova Scotia Women’s FishNet  held a series of workshops, one of which was in Little Harbour, Shelburne County. These workshops were intended to provide a forum for women to discuss their concerns and perspective around the inshore fishing industry and to provide the opportunity for women to voice their desire to have a say in the decision-making process that impacts both directly and indirectly on their every day lives. From this workshop, Shelburne County Women’s Fishnet was initiated.
  • From December 1998 to May 1999, Shelburne County Women’s FishNet conducted a research  project in partnership with the Canadian Research Institute for the Advancement of Women.  This research was conducted to identify the impacts the down turn of the fisheries was having on women’s health.
  • As a direct result of the 1998-1999 research, Shelburne County Women’s FishNet supported the opening of two women’s resource center; one in Wood’s Harbour and one in Lockeport.
  • November, 1999-Shelburne County Women’s FishNet incorporated under the Society’s Act with a clear objective to create a support network for women in Shelburne County.

  • April 2000-Shelburne County FishNet formed a partnership with the Women for Economic Equality Society and initiated a project to bring women back into the community-based economic development.
